The Guess Who were an interesting band. They started out as a group called The Reflections, based out of Canada. When they recorded a cover of "Shakin' All Over," their record company decided to challenge (confuse) buyers, asking "Guess Who?" on the label.

The record made enough of an impact that people wanted more from the group they mistakenly thought was called "the Guess Who." The group changed their name to match, and a personnel change brought in a vocalist named Burton Cummings, who would, along with guitarist Randy Bachman, create the Guess Who's commercial sound. Most of their early hits, like "These Eyes" and "American Woman," were either collaborations between Bachman and Cummings, or simply Bachman jobs, and the work is solid. By the time they recorded "Hand Me Down World" (the tracks are presented chronologically), Bachman had quit the group (and would eventually form Bachman-Turner Overdrive). Burton Cummings and the two guitarists who followed Bachman wrote the remainder of the group's hits.

All the songs on here are great, though I think the first half of the disc is stronger. I'd heard "These Eyes" and "No Time" a million times on the Boston oldies station when I was younger. "No Time" is a fantastic song, with a perfectly timed beat. "Laughing" is a subtle rock ballad with harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles. "No Sugar Tonight..." "Share the Land" and "Hand Me Down World" are all fantastic. "Rain Dance" has this amazing echoey Native American sound to it. Actually, just about every song on here is great; there's very little that feels like filler material.
