Something puzzles me about this album... On the album jacket's cover, in the upper left-hand corner, it says "A Capitol [Records] Re-Issue." That's fine; I'm not an elitist about stuff like that. However, the bottom right corner reads "(Formerly entitled "THE BEACH BOYS TODAY")," and on the back says "This album contains fewer songs than in the originally released album."
If you change both an album's name and contents, can it really be considered a re-issue?
I don't know, and it'll nag me till the day I die. Anyway, this is a decent album. "When I Grow Up..." is a great song, as is "Dance, Dance, Dance." "Help Me, Rhonda" is a classic, but this is not the well-known single. This was a first version, and on the group's next album they re-recorded it. That re-recorded version was released as the single, and went on to fame and fortune. Does this one suck? No. Had it been put out as a single, it would have done well. Is it noticeably different? Yes. The harmonies are a little more primitive, and the mix just isn't as good as the other. That's life, I suppose.
