This is a graphic I did as part of the logo for the Lunar Club, an observational program of the Astronomical League. The League, which is a national organization to which most astronomy clubs in the country belong, has many voluntary observational clubs for its members to participate in. Much like for Boy Scouts, once the criteria of a program are met, you get your badge - or in this case an enameled pin.
Steve Nathan, a friend from the astronomy club I belong to, decided in 1995 that a Lunar Club would be a nice addition to the Astronomical League's viewing programs, and took it upon himself to draw up the plans and materials for it, and then proposed it to the League. They loved his idea, and I mentioned that he might want a logo for the program's newsletter and the pin you would receive upon completion of the program. He liked the idea, so I created this artwork in Neopaint.
After moving away, Steve returned to the club in October 2000, to deliver a talk at our annual Pot Luck Supper. While there, he presented me with the first enamel pin that had been produced for the program - something he'd been holding for a number of years. He's a nice guy.
