Download Blow

Toward the end of January 2001, I was approached to do askin for another New Line Cinema movie - this one would be for Ted Demme's 70's-era drug film 'Blow.'

Planning on this skin was very interesting; I'd never been part of a conference call before, and I got to see a lot of how advertising people think ("You've got to put Penelope Cruz on it. She's really hot right now.").

I received the film's 'title treatment' attached to an e-mail the next day. Incidentally, 'title treatment' is a glorified graphic design way of saying 'logo for the movie.' I don't know why they couldn't just say 'logo for the movie,' except that saying something in a straightforward way is somewhat of a foreign concept in advertising (refer to the film 'Crazy People' for more on that).

The big thing that came up in the conference call with the the agency who was doing most of the visual design for the movie (posters, website, etc) was that they really liked the color blue and they thought their website was the end-all, be-all of design...

...so they advocated I replicate the website.

I reproduced their website design for the main window, and then worked from that style for the remaining windows.

I like the finished skin a lot. The best thing, I think, are the animated EQ sliders.
